But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not
live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out
of the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4)
Of everything that God created on earth, only man was made a spirit being. All the animals and plants came into being when God gave the Word; but for man, two things are noteworthy. First, Genesis 1:26 says God created man in His image and in His likeness. Then Genesis 2:7 says He formed man from the dust of the ground; the man He’d already created. The two underlined expressions are different, as they both reveal God’s purpose, plan and vision for man.
The “created” man, was the human spirit, after which his body was formed from the dust of the ground. Then, the Bible says, “He breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.” God introduced the spirit-man He had created into the physical body of man that He formed, and man became a living soul (Genesis 2:7). That’s what makes man different from all the other animals.
You’re primarily a spirit being; you’re not a physical body; and the real food for the human spirit is the Word of God. You were born to feed on God’s Word. The development of your spirit (which is the real you) is through the Word. It’s for the same reason that Jesus said, “…man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God” (Luke 4:4).
Your sustenance is through the Word, since you’re the offspring of the Word. 1 Peter 1:23 says, “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.” Everything in life is sustained by its source, and your source or origin is the Word.
Therefore, for you to excel, for you to sustain yourself in the upward and forward life, you must give yourself wholly to the Word. The life we have in Christ is one of great glory and prosperity, but it’s a life lived in, and by the Word.
PRAYER Precious Father, your living Word is my delight; I’m nourished and edified as I meditate on the Word today. My life is beautified, and my spirit fortified to take a hold of your perfect will and walk therein, today and always, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
