Burke claims that “indifference” is fatal to religion; the same can be said of the political process.  To be apathetic towards the laws that control your life and the lives of your children is to be an unfaithful American.  We need to do more than cast our vote.  We need to set the terms of debate and let our voices be heard.  We must start in our own communities and let our influence at home be heard all the way to the White House.

Political involvement goes further than casting a vote.  Edmund Burke, political philosopher and statesman, once said, “It is a general poplar error to suppose the loudest complainers for the public to be the most anxious for its welfare.”  We must do more than stand on our soapbox and complain.  We will not be acknowledged for the problems we recognize, but for the problems we help solve.

We can all get involved in the political process by attending precinct meetings, volunteering in local campaigns, making financial contributions to a worthy candidate, fundraising, or supporting voter registration drives.  Involvement can be taken even further by trying to influence opinion in public forums by writing letters to the editor of newspapers, calling into radio talk shows to voice our informed opinion, and bring to the surface issues that are important to sustain traditional values in America.  We can even run for precinct or county offices.  Somebody has to fill the lower offices in our system, so why not us?
