Then the Lord said to Samuel: "Behold, I will do something in Israel at which both ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. In that day I will perform against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. For I have told him that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knows, because his sons made themselves vile, and he did not restrain them."
David had the courage to kill a lion and a bear with his bare hands and to fight Goliath alone, but he lacked the courage to discipline his son Absalom. That son became a cold-blooded killer, who eventually didn't just want David's crown - he wanted his father's head (2 Samuel 15:14).
God's Word is clear about disciplining a child. "He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly" (Proverbs 13:24). "Chasten your son while there is hope, and do not set your heart on his destruction" (Proverbs 19:18). Eli was the high priest of Israel and had two grown sons whom he refused to discipline. They were drunkards and whore-mongers who profaned the tabernacle (1 Samuel 2:22). And when they sinned, Eli made excuses for their sin. The results was both Eli and his sons perished in judgment (1 Samuel 4:11, 18).
If you love your child, you will be strong in your discipline toward him or her.
