A religion of Escapism by John Hagee

2 Timothy 1:7

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

I have spent much of my life traveling on planes, and during a recent trip I came across a man who was clearly trying to make my blood boil. I knew it was going to be a long ride home when he said to me, "Pastor, I don't believe in Christianity. I think it's a religion of escapism." My answer was very straightforward: "It absolutely is."

People can escape sickness and disease because the Bible says that by His stripes I am healed. I can escape death because he that believes in Jesus shall never die. Children of God can escape loneliness, for the Bible says that God will never leave you nor forsake you. We can also escape depression because the joy of the Lord is our strength.

The man next to me thought I was finished, but I was just getting warmed up. As followers of the Most High God, we can escape fear because He has not given us a spirit of fear, but of a sound mind. We can escape poverty because it is the Lord that gives us the power to get wealth. He supplies all of my needs according to His riches in glory, so I don't have to want for anything.

We can escape addiction--the Word says whosoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be delivered. We can escape the pit of hell--if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive our sins. And we all know, whom the Son sets free is free indeed.
