1 Peter 2:17
Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king
We find ourselves in the middle of an all-about-me culture. We live out our lives in selfies and social media. This is me waking up. This is me eating breakfast. This is me working out. This is me arriving at work. This is me walking. This is me talking. This is me. This is me. This is me.
We climb into the car in our garage and drive to work where we sit in a personal cubicle and stare at a computer screen all day. On the way home, someone loads our groceries that we ordered online into the back of the car. We drive home, raise the automatic garage door, glide into the garage, and hit the button to close out the world. In an increasingly larger world, we have become ever more isolated and self-centered.
The Christian community to which we belong runs counter to our culture. We are adopted into this diverse, loving, noisy, happy, and sometimes messy family. We are called to love and unity, discipline and celebration. We are to live in affectionate relationship. We gather to encourage one another with songs and scriptures. We restore those who fall. We reach out to those who are thirsty and hungry. We laugh with those who rejoice. We break bread and build bridges. We erase barriers and ease the burdens of those who are bowed down.
In an all-about-me world, we place the spotlight squarely on Jesus Christ. We are all about His will and His way. He alone deserves center stage in our lives. He alone sits on the throne of our hearts. His mission has become our mission – to go and to tell.
And always, our doors, our hands, and our hearts are open to those who need healing and hope. If you wish to be included, you are invited. If you long to belong, there is a place for you here. Come and stay. Welcome home.
Blessing:
Heavenly Father, thank You for adopting us into Your family, for drawing us near, for loving us well, and for giving us an eternal home. Let us always be aware of those who are longing for these same things. May we run to them with the truth of Your love and the promise of Your hope and draw them into this joyful fellowship of believers. In the name of Jesus…amen.
