“I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.
We not only need to play the game according to the rules,
We also need to play it with all our heart, mind, soul and strength.
We must give it our best shot every minute!
This is our duty before God, who has given us life and in so doing has “put us in the game.”
Remember the sin of the church in Laodicea? The church didn’t walk off the field and quit altogether. It kept playing, but only half-heartedly. John recorded the opinion of our Lord in Revelation 3:15-16. The message? Half-hearted play is disgusting in the eyes of God.
When we stand before the righteous judge, His approval will depend not upon our skill, nor upon our success, but upon our willingness to do our duty. Duty is not what we choose to do; it is what He has chosen for us to do.
It is said that King Henry of Bavaria became weary of court life and decided to enter a monastery. The prior gave him the rules of the order. The king listened eagerly and expressed delight at the prospect of such complete consecration.
The prior explained that obedience, exact and complete, was the first requisite of sainthood. The monarch promised to follow his will in every detail. “Very well, then,” said the prior. “Go back to your throne and do your duty in the station God has assigned to you.” The king took up his scepter again. Ever after, his subjects said of him, “King Henry has learned to rule by learning to obey.”
Learn to obey…wholeheartedly!
