Matthew 5:7—Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy

Part Two—

Of all the principles of happiness that Jesus proclaims, this one is the most appealing, the most important and the most difficult.

It’s appealing because we all crave mercy. This is especially true, for instance, when we’re clocked by radar doing fifty miles per hour in a thirty five mile per hour zone. Before we have the window rolled all the way down we’re pleading for mercy. “Officer, something must be terribly wrong with my speedometer,” we say, “because this is the second one of these I’ve gotten today.”
“Here’s the third,” replies the officer in a monotone. “One more of these and you’ll be riding a bicycle.”

Mercy is very appealing. And the more we recognize how desperately we need it, the more appealing it is.
