But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

James paints a vivid portrait of the uncontrolled tongue:

The tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.  Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.  The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body.  It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

From time to time we watch massive forest fires rage out of control, firefighters helpless to stop the devastation.  Homes, businesses, schools, churches and millions of dollars in timber are lost.

So it is with the tongue.  It is Satan’s tool for destroying homes, marriages, friendships, and churches.

The Bible tells of only two sources of fire for the tongue.  It can be set ablaze with the fire of the Holy Spirit Acts 2, or it can be set on fire by hell.

The choice is ours!
